"Rights' do not exist, any more than unicorns, or messages from God. The only thing that exists is people, how they act toward each other, and how we judge those actions.
If we are any kind of honest libertarian at all, then we take the non-aggression principle seriously, and the use of violence to get what we want in ANY aspect of our lives is completely immoral. Which leaves negotiation, trade, and competition as the only moral means of conflict resolution.
Freedom is therefore, simply an effect of morally good behavior. When you treat people in a morally good manner, the resulting effect is freedom for both you and the other person. When you treat them in an immoral manner, the resulting effect is diminished freedom for the other person -- and you."
- From my friend Greg Gauthier
More on the subject of "rights" here. I am guilty myself of using the word, as it is a rather snappy shortcut. But in most cases it is just redundant.
