- Traditionalist claims that modern art could just as well be replaced by a “paint-throwing chimp”
- Has contemporary art become a con?
- Has the art world lost is mind?
If you are into documentaries I would recommend this one and this one in particular. Netflix has quite a few along the same lines. Some of the documentaries focus on the political aspects of art, such as the State wanting to take over collections of art and squander it away, and other documentaries focus on the outrageous behavior of art critics and other vexing problems in the art world.
I remember seeing this one documentary (I can't recall the name of it) where this really brilliant artist wanted to do some kind of pencil or charcoal sketch of of a Marilyn Monroe picture and he decided to spend a few years on it. He studied every conceivable bodily feature until he could reproduce in his drawing the slightest of details like skin pores! To make a long story short he finally completed the MM drawing and showed it to this dude that he admired so much, only to have this dude snort and make a snide comment like "It should have been in color instead of black and white" or something to that effect. The poor guy seemed devastated by that. But hey, that's the art world apparently.
Before you think I'm bashing all artists, I'm not. I myself LOVE and respect art very much. I myself have tried my hand at doing pastel painting (but admittedly I'm not trained in it and I suck) so I think I appreciate just how hard artists have to study and practice before doing their work. But I think even artists have to admit that there's a lot of stupid shit that goes on in the art world.
At the moment I have no further thoughts on this or how a would be rational artist would go about changing this depressing state other than to study philosophy, self-knowledge, and other areas. I do have some podcasts on this topic I would like my audience to listen to when you get a chance. I think my good friend here has much more to say about this than I do.
